Our mission
BABA has provided more than $25,000 to communities in 2023. in 2024 OUR Mission is to make a greater positive impact through giving.
The Bankhead Atlanta Boxing Academy, Incorporated (also known as “BABA” or “Baba”) is a charitable organization that was founded in 1982 by Mr. Samalj Floyd Sr. to provide mentoring, personal development, and academic support to school aged youth by using boxing and related athletic endeavors as a platform to attract and connect to under resourced and underserved young people in the Bankhead section and other inner city neighborhoods of Atlanta. In this capacity it has served literally thousands of young people through feeding, clothing, school supplies, mentorship and athletic endeavors. These activities have given young people the life skills and material resources that in many cases have helped to steer them away from gangs, illicit street activity and towards academic achievement and productive citizenship.
After many years of sustained growth and regular activity, the organization experienced an extended dormancy due primarily to the declining health and subsequent passing of its founder and the pause of fundraising activity and capital development that resulted from it. However, in recent years the organization has successfully reestablished its public profile through its new community outreach programs.
Today, BABA is positioning itself to have a broader reach both regionally and demographically. Since 2020, BABA’s mission has evolved and broadened to address the needs of entire communities it serves and not merely youth, although youth remain its primary target. This includes broadening activities to include more rural counties in north Georgia while still maintaining its presence as a service provider in neighborhoods in and around Atlanta. In order to enable it to meet the needs of underserved and under resourced communities, Bankhead Atlanta Boxing Academy, Incorporated is launching an extended capital campaign in 2024 and 2025 to help fund its initiatives to• feed, clothe, and provide academic support to young people including financial and civic literacy • provide food, clothing, housing, and assistance to persons of any age at risk of homelessness and/or food insecurity• Provide programs that offer academic opportunities to gifted and talented young people in at-risk communities• Promote positive relationships between youth and law enforcement personnel that serve at-risk communities through athletics and mentorship activities. There is much more to be done. Please be a co-laborer with us by volunteering or donating towards our programmatic agenda of activities listed above.
